Solutions for Acne Scars

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Once acne’s been inflamed, then heals, it leaves behind acne scars. These scars can stay for years if they’re not treated.  They can be minimized by "skin lightening" products, and can be removed by growth of new skin layers, which produces collagen.  Acne scars result from the skin layer’s inability to produce enough collagen to repair it.  This is where acne scar removers come in.  They can work very quickly during your skin replenishment, and essentially lighten up the scarred skin.

Acne scars are characterized by their size, shape, and appearance.  They’re classified as "early" or permanent scars, depending on how long you’ve had them.  More recent scars can respond to topical medication a lot better than older scars.  Most scars can be treated by a combination of topical solutions, and there are surgical procedures such as laser acne removal, that heightens skin resurfacing.

There are many acne scar treatments available today.  I will outline some of them, and other alternative ways to remove them.

Natural Methods of Scar Removal

Although this may take longer than some topical medications and surgical procedures, it won’t damage or irritate your skin any more than it already has been, because it only uses natural remedies and elements.

Water:  An old analogy, but True!  If you drink eight glasses of water a day, it does help minimize acne scars, because the skin needs moisture to remain smooth and flexible. It also helps the skin’s renewal process.

Aloe Vera helps condition the skin like above, as well as reduce pain naturally heal burns, cuts, etc.

Honey used regularly will help break up the scar tissue.

Vitamin E:  You can break a Vitamin E capsule open, and rub it on the scar gently for 30-60 seconds to break up the scar tissue.

Vegetables & Fruits:  Vegetables like carrots, cucumber, spinach, and fresh fruits help complete skin health due to the vitamins and minerals in them. Use an onion slice or onion juice on the scar.  Lemon juice will help diminish the darkness and appearance of the scar.

Essential Oils:  Tea tree oil, Lavender oil, and Lemon oil are all natural essential oils that help acne scar reduction.  They’re used to cleanse the skin and remove dead skin layers.

Medical Grade Chemical Peels For Purchase (What Doctors Never Tell You)

Brief Overview Of Chemical Peels

Doctors overcharge for chemical peels big time. It shouldn’t have to cost a few thousand dollars every time you get a chemical peel done. AHA peels (mild peels), and TCA peels (moderate peels), can often cost a few thousand dollars to get the complete treatment performed because usually multiple peels are necessary to see results.

What these doctors don’t tell you is, you can get similar results for just fifteen dollars if you perform the treatment yourself. Although you can’t use peels that burn the skin to remove the skin layers, for example the phenol peel (extremely severe chemical peel that requires a doctor to perform), less intense peels have been proven to show the same or better results than the peels performed by doctors.

Also, learn more about the Chemical Peel Aftercare at Best Chemical Peel Review.

Brief Overview of Chemical Peels

AHA Peels - mild peels including glycolic acid and salicylic acid peels. They are used to treat mild skin defects. They are used regularly.
TCA Peels - moderate peels, which burn the skin to remove skin layers. These are usually performed by doctors.
Phenol Peels - severe peels that may require hospitalization. Phenol Peels are slowly being replaced by multiple treatments of TCA peels, as TCA peels allow the patient to heal a lot faster than Phenol Peels.

DIY Chemical Peels are often a mixture of AHA and TCA peels combined. They work effectively to gently remove the top layers of skin. The concentration for TCA is usually around 20 - 30% to prevent burning of the skin. A good chemical peel would soften up the top layers of skin, and over the period of a week, the skin would gently start to flake off. When the top layers of skin fall off, new, red, fresh skin would start to show.

These do-it-yourself peels have proven to be just as effective as the peels performed in the doctor’s office. Many have seen little change when the chemical peel was performed by the doctor, except for their empty bank account. Although there is a slight risk, for example accidentally getting the acid into the eyes, DIY Chemical Peels are relatively safe to perform, as long as the concentrations of the peel isn’t burning off the top layers of skin.

They do have a ’stinging sensation’ when you place the peel on for the first time. You are applying acid to your face, so this is expected. The stinging is bearable (assuming you aren’t using a phenol peel), so there isn’t much to worry.

So, you probably want to purchase chemical peels at a cheap price. Chemical peels are chemical peels - there is no such thing as ‘a better chemical peel.’ Chemical peels all come with the same ingredients, but with different concentrations, which is labeled on the peel you decide to purchase. Many companies like to sell overpriced chemical peels for hundreds of dollars, providing you with pretty packaging. Don’t fall for these advertising techniques - you can purchase a better chemical peel for just fifteen to thirty dollars. Save your bank.

Results From Chemical Peels - Do Chemical Peels Work?

A chemical peel uses a single acid, or several different acids, to penetrate the top layer of skin. When the skin is peeled off, it takes with it fine lines, shallow discolorations and scars. There are three kinds of chemical peels, differing in the acid used and the depth of the treatment. The results from chemical peels will depend on which one your doctor thinks is right for you.

The process of a chemical peel is as shown in the video above.

A light chemical peel is performed in the doctor’s office using alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) and betahydroxy acids (BHAs). These are the active ingredients in exfoliating face creams. They can reduce fine lines and shallow discolorations, but not scars or sun damage. The doctor applies these acids to your carefully cleansed face, leaves the solution on for about 10 to 15 minutes, and then neutralizes the acid with saline solution and cleans it off. There is little or no pain. However, because the treatment is light, the results from chemical peels may be small. Sometimes two or three sessions are needed to achieve the desired results, and weekly or monthly refreshers are not uncommon.

A medium peel uses trichloroacetic acids (TCA). Depending on the strength of the solution, the procedure may take place in the doctor’s office, or as a hospital outpatient. Anesthetic is usually unnecessary, but you may be given a sedative to keep you relaxed. This deeper peel takes about 15 minutes, can partially restore sun-damaged skin and reach slightly deeper wrinkles and uneven skin tone, but not acne scars. It may have to be repeated.

Phenol acid is used in the deep chemical peel, again either in the doctor’s office, or as an outpatient. A full-face peel requires extra skin preparation before, and may require bandages after. It can take as long as two hours, although partial peels on one small area take less time. You will have anesthesia on this one. The results from chemical peels of this type are usually very visible, and only one is needed. Deep wrinkles and pre-cancerous conditions can be treated in this way.

A word of warning: People with dark skin should be cautious about any type of facial peel and most often should not even attempt a deep peel. Olive or black skin can scar and discolor permanently from this treatment. If your doctor says you are not a good candidate for results from chemical peels, get a new procedure, not a new doctor.

Chemical Peel Treatment For Acne Scars

Read more about Acne Scar Treatment to gain back that beautiful looking skin.

The video above shows a chemical peel face before and after photos of a patient that went through the treatment.

Chemical peel treatment is a very effective treatment to remove even deep rooted scars left over by severe acne.A carefully followed procedure could be of great help in restoring your skin of its natural beauty.

Chemical peel treatment can be used to get rid of years and years of accumulated acne scars and debris on the face. It works by the removing of the top layers of the skin which are scarred. The new skin layers which replace the old ones are free of scars. It can cause burning and itching during the time of application, but it will soon ease out.

Chemical peel could be home administered or hospital administered. Depending on the type of peel and the nature of your facial scar, you can choose to go for a home peel or a hospital administered peel. However, when you have severe acne on the face, it is recommended to wait for the acne to heal before going in for peel treatment to remove scars.

Which Peel should you choose?

Chemical peels come in various strengths and concentrations. A doctor may be able to help you decide the concentration that your skin needs. However, the general mantra is to go in for the lowest strength to check your skin’s response and slowly keep increasing the concentration. It should also be noted that a gap of at least 3 weeks is recommended before between your first peel and your next peel.

Various peels like TCA (Trichloro acetic acid), AHA (Alpha hydroxy acid), Glycolic peels etc are available today. The lower strength peels also known as lunch time peels can be used like a lunch time peel as the recovery time is very little. However, strong peels that treat deep scars require a long period of recovery time as the face can look un presentable for a few days. Further, in some extreme cases, it might warrant hospitalization as the skin becomes prone to infection.

Chemical Peel Aftercare:

It is important to wear a strong sunscreen lotion after undergoing the peel. It is best if sun exposure could be avoided altogether if it is a strong peel you had undergone. The skin tends to run dry and hence, it is important to use a moisturizer during the aftercare period.

Home administered chemical peels are gaining popularity with the cost of hospital administered peel being expensive. Home administered peels are a good alternative provided; it is done with taking proper care and precautions.

6 Treatments for Acne Scars Marks You Must Know

Acne Scar Treatment - 6 Types you must Know

An alternate solution to cure acne scar the natural way can be done. Click here to learn.

Acne is a skin problem typically occurred as a result of clogging up skin pores by dead cells mixed with skin oils. Acne scars are typically categorized under three heads, as described by Jacob et al (2001). According to this categorization system, icepick, rolling and boxcar are the three types of acne scars prevalent worldwide. Icepick is the type of acne scar that refers to as a sharp narrow scar resembling like punctured with an icepick. This type of scar is narrower than 2mm and is lengthened through the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer.

Icepicks can not be cured with regular skin resurfacing treatments such as laser resurfacing or dermabrasion as because they are so deep down through the skin. Rolling scars are typically occurred on the subcutaneous tissues below normal appearing skin. These types of scars can be treated by rupturing up the subcutaneous fibrous bands. The third category on the list is boxcar scar which is generally found on the skin as a round to oval depression along with sharp vertical edges. This article sheds light on various segments associated with the  and its usages.

In practice, there are several methodologies that can be used as a mode for acne scar treatment; however, you need to be selective by analyzing its probable risks and benefits. In some cases, doctors and dermatologists prefer to recommend a combination of treatment, rather than using any single acne scar treatment. Let us explore few effective acne scar treatment procedures.

Dermal Fillers

There is a wide range of dermal fillers that can be recommended by dermatologists ensuring to provide a smoother look on the skin. It is injected on the skin to make the surface raised. Typically, human collagen, polytheyl-methacrylate micropsheres with collagen, bovine collagen, hyaluronic acid derivatives and fat are used as dermal fillers. However, these fillers do not offer any permanent solution, hence further injection is necessary.

Laser Resurfacing

Many skin problems get cured by laser surfacing. Two types of laser surfacing are commonly used - carbon dioxide and erbium: YAG. It follows the mechanism of skin burning of outer skin layer to a specific depth. The healing process is followed with a restructuring of skin texture using newer appearing skin. The post-operative phase matters a lot for ensuring the actual success of the surgery.

Punch Excision

It is essentially used in boxcar and icepick types of acne scar treatment. A punch biopsy tool is used as according to the size of the scars. Scars are expunged with the help of the punch tool and the open skin edges are stitched up together. This newly developed scar however fades in time.

Skin Graft Treatment

This is an extended part of punch excision, a type of acne scar treatment. In this method, open skin edges are not stitched up rather the scar area is grafted with skin taken from the back of the ear. At the post-operative phase, variation in color and texture may be noticeable; however, it can be corrected successfully using laser resurfacing technique.

Punch Elevation

In this method, a punch biopsy tool is used to remove the base of the scars. After removing, the punch tool is used to elevate the base and to attach it to the surface area of the skin. This acne scar treatment is beneficial in terms of reducing the risk of getting skin in different color or texture.

Subcutaneous Incision

This method is particularly useful for treating rolling scars. It works by breaking the fibrous band which is responsible for developing rolling scars. The process is done using a beveled needle below the skin. It is kept parallel to the skin surface and then the needle gently cuts tethering bands. There are mainly two apparent risks associated with this procedure. One is bleeding and the other one is development of subcutaneous nodules. However the possibility of risks can be minimized with appropriate medications.

Over The Counter Acne Scar Solutions - Please Understand This To Remove Your Acne Scars

Learn how to cure acne scars naturally with just 3 days.

Buying over the counter acne scar solutions is not just about going to the local pharmacy and picking any product. You really need to understand a few things and in this article, you will learn the causes and different types of acne scars as well as how some treatment methods work.

If you have mild or moderate acne, there is highly likely that you can get rid of those pimples and zits without leaving any scars. On the other hand, if your acne conditions are severe, it’s extremely difficult to do so without scars. One can really get depressed with these scars as they stay with you forever unless you find a way to effectively treat it. And treatment methods can be expensive unless you can find effective and affordable over the counter acne scars solutions.

What Causes Acne Scars?

It is worthwhile understanding what can cause acne scars to develop. Whenever a person gets severe acne, the tissue is dealt with an injury. When the tissue gets injured, the body reacts by trying to repair the damage with the use of white blood cells and inflammatory molecules. But after repairing it, that spot on your skin might be left with a scar. Scars generally develop when there is a loss of tissue or an increase of tissue formation. Where acne scars are concerned, tissue loss is a common reason.

Different Types of Acne Scars

Not all acne scars are the same - there are in fact several types. These included depressed fibrotic scars, ice pick scars, atrophic macules, soft, superficial or deep scars and follicular macular atrophy. Depressed fibotic scars are normally pretty large with sharp edges and steep sides. Ice pick scars generally happens on the cheeks. They are little and with steep sides and rough edge. It can be soft or hard to touch and can be deep or shallow. Atrophic macules are small when developed on the face but can be pretty big when it develops on the body. It can appear bluish. But after quite a while its color will change to almost exactly the same color with your skin. Soft superficial or deep scars are soft with sloping rolled edges blending with your normal skin. Follicular macular atrophy often occurs on the back or the chest of a person with acne.

Some Acne Treatment Methods

Dermabrasion, chemical peels, laser treatment and soft tissue augmentation are among some of the treatments available today. Some of these are expensive and need to be administered by a doctor whereas others are available as over the counter acne scar solutions.

Dermabrasion is good for removing both deeper and hypertrophic scars since deep layers of the skin can be reached. Chemical peels can improve small, depressed scars and maybe some large scars. Laser treatment of acne scars is used to treat complex acne scars. It can be very effective on some patients. Soft tissue augmentation can correct some atrophic scars. Subcutaneous fat or collagen is injected under the scars.

Getting rid of acne scars is definitely not easy. While there are some over the counter scar solutions to choose from, there is none can completely eradicate or prevent it from recurring. Do be careful with what you select since every one’s body chemistry is different and as such, while a solution may work for others, it may not work for you.

omega 3 to heal acne scarsThe Skin Benefits Of Omega 3 - Tinned But Untamed

Learn how to cure acne naturally in just 3 days. Click here to learn more.

The article below explains about how Omega 3 effectively provides us healthy great skin, which serve as a great way to build up new skin to cure acne marks. You may also want to read Acne Scar Home Remedies - 3 Simple Ways for more acne scar cures.

Food omega 3 sources are a much better option than fish oil supplements. Discover why in one case a common assumption about canned versus fresh may be misinformed. And learn how omega 3 and protein can benefit the skin.

omega 3 acne

Omega 3 fatty acids and protein are great for healthy skin. Hair, skin and nails are mostly made of protein, though the minerals, vitamins, and phytochemicals we get from the best type of carbohydrates - fruit and vegetables - are also crucial if skin care is your goal.

Protein is needed to repair cells, it is important for energy levels, balancing blood sugar levels, and is involved with glutathione production. Glutathione is an important antioxidant, and antioxidants are essential components of eating your way to beauty.

So what are some good sources of protein that are somewhat under-represented in our average diet?

Fish is excellent as it supplies both protein, and the omega 3 fatty acids, which are believed to contribute to skin health. The oily fish like salmon, tuna, cod and mackerel are good natural sources of omega 3, that have the advantage of avoiding the reflux problem associated with many fish oil supplements. Being a whole food, these fish also have DMAE, which is excellent for protecting cellular membranes and improving skin tone. (Angyal) Recommended sources of DMAE from fish are anchovies, sardines, and wild salmon.

salmon best natural cure for acne

Canned salmon is a good option, generally. Although it may seem strange to encourage people to eat canned salmon over fresh salmon, it has some important advantages that are the direct result of farming practices for fresh fish. According to Erica Angyal, the author of Gorgeous Skin In 30 Days, canned salmon is typically wild salmon. Wild salmon and farmed salmon that was raised in crowded pens made of nets (think of an underwater battery cage), have some important differences in nutrient value.

The food farmed salmon are fed is very different to what wild salmon eat. Wild salmon eat other sea residents such as shrimp and krill. And it is this diet that gives them the lovely pink color we associate with salmon. On the other hand, farmed salmon are fed soybean pellets and other cereal based food, which changes their ratio of essential fatty acids. They become characterized by higher levels of saturated fats and omega 6 fatty acids (linoleic acid), which we get plenty of in our diets anyway, and their levels of the beneficial omega 3 fatty acids become lower. Given that the whole point many people eat fish for is to change this very ratio in themselves, it seems to negate the point somewhat.
