Laser Acne Scar Treatment:Resurfacing Is Refreshing!
Sunday, August 29th, 2010Laser treatments (also called laser resurfacing), are another way that lasers are used for us to fix cosmetic issues. Lasers are widely used to remove unwanted hair, wrinkles and lines. And most importantly to us: acne scars.
If you are thinking of getting laser resurfacing for acne scars, you need to consult with an experienced specialist first. Because skin types, amount of damage and previous treatment methods all play a part in deciding the method of treatment used, a thorough consultation is vital to treatment success.
Before you head in for your first consultation, you can learn a little more about acne scar laser treatments in this article.
Will I achieve an even complexion?
This is one of the main questions people have when considering laser resurfacing. Acne scars can make it very difficult to achieve a completely even complexion afterwards. Skin texture and the different tissue types (scar tissue v skin tissue) make completely even complexion unlikely. There will be a vast improvement.
Will I still have breakouts?
Resurfacing lasers do not penetrate overly deeply. Breakouts may still occur. In most cases where breakouts do occur, they are less frequent and severe.
What is a CO2 laser and how does it work?
CO2 lasers are the most widely used resurfacing laser. They work by targeting and eliminating the scarred skin. When the damaged tissue is removed, a healing process begins. Your body grows new, smoother skin where the scars used to be.
My acne scars are very deep. Will I get good results?
It is not likely that deep acne scars will be totally wiped out. While you will see a vast improvement, deep scarring often requires more than one treatment.
What are the side effects?
You might experience some discomfort during the actual procedure. The skin might become red and irritated. There may be some initial darkening or lightening of the skin. Minimal scarring can occur.
How many treatments will I need?
Very often, a course of one treatment per month for 3 months is recommended. If you are in the midst of a breakout, or have some sort of infection associated with your acne, this procedure is not recommended. It is in your best interest to clear up those problems first.
Will I need an anesthetic?
Laser resurfacing is usually done under local anesthetia. Your doctor may require you to take an oral sedative as well.
What about afterwards?
Afterwards you should apply moisturizing ointments to help the skin heal and to cut down the chances of an infection. Depending on your individual needs, you might be asked to apply just moisturizing ointments, or you might have to apply dressings with ointment on them.
What is the recovery time?
This will depend on both your skin, and the treatment itself. The average recovery time is about two weeks. Pain medication is likely to be prescribed, and possibly something to reduce any swelling.
How much will it cost?
This depends on so many factors, we can’t really tell you. As we said, pre-treatment consultation is vital, and this is a question you should ask the doctor that would perform the procedure.
So you have a general idea, we’ll give you a very broad estimate.
For minor scarring, you can expect to pay between $600-$1500. More extensive scarring covering the entire face could require between $2500-$6000.
We hope this article answered some of your questions. There are so many factors; degree of scarring, best treatment course, skin type, prices in your location…This list goes on. If you are considering any surgical procedure like this, a consultation with an experienced pro is absolutely vital.
